We Raised £78,000 For The Prince’s Trust!

We are just back from Edinburgh, where we raised $150,000 or £78,000 at The Prince’s Trust Scotland ‘Lunch with an Old Bag’ charity event. This fabulous fixture was hosted by the wonderful Dame Joan Bakewell, who is well known for her lively, witty, direct and thought-provoking style and the event made the third page of The Scotsman newspaper by the next morning.

Scarlett Johansson tried to get a signed bag from Louis Vuitton, but sadly it was too late, as was Teri Seymore (thanks anyway Scarlett and Teri - we still love you!); however, we received a Louis Vuitton from Martine McCutchen; Ray Parlour got the entire Arsenal team to sign a shirt; and the amazing designer, Christian Audigier, created a bag and filled it with bottles of his new wine and champagne. Other bags which went under the hammer included:

  • an Yves St Laurent bag donated by rock singer, Shirley Manson,
  • Chris Hoy’s Beijing Olympics bag,
  • a Moulin Rouge bag from the movie starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor – who also donated the bag he used on his motorbike tour,
  • Sienna Miller’s Union Jack bag,
  • Andy Murray’s tennis kit bag,
  • Jackie Stewart’s Rolex bag,
  • Barry Gibb’s signed guitar and case,
  • a Lulu Guinness bag, donated by the designer,
  • Emma Thompson’s iconic Anya Hindmarch ‘Be a Bag’ handbag, which has a photograph of Emma with Robbie Coltrane, Siobhan Redmond, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.

Other donations came from broadcaster Gabby Logan; property pundits Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer; and James Thompson, who gifted a Smythson ‘Nancy’ bag, named by designer Samantha Cameron – wife of Conservative Party Leader David – after their daughter Nancy and legendary interior decorator, Nancy Lancaster, who was the peak of chic. If that wasn’t enough, Thompson also threw in a tour of a champagne vineyard and two nights in Paris. Suffice to say, an excellent time was had by all and many thanks to everyone who was involved!

Prick Up Your Ears

We are proud to announce we will be hosting the premiere party for the opening night of ‘Little Britain’ star Matt Lucas’ new play. ‘Prick Up Your Ears’ is a new play, by Simon Bent, about the life and times of playwright Joe Orton. Opening at the West End’s Comedy Theatre, ‘Prick Up Your Ears’ is a darkly funny and moving play which imagines what really happened when, after years of creative collaboration, the door slammed shut and Kenneth was home alone. It tells the sensational story behind the domestic life of Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell, holed up in a tiny flat in Islington, trading well-trodden insults and hilarious put-downs like any old married couple.

Second Light?

After our uber-successful hosting of the First Light Movies event in 2009, we are proud to announce we will now be organising the next official after party for the First Light Movie Awards at The Penthouse on 2nd March 2010.

Each year First Light organises the First Light Awards. This year, the annual celebration of young people’s film making in the UK took a giant leap forward, firmly establishing itself as a permanent fixture in the film awards calendar and attracting more industry partners, celebrity endorsements, media attention and corporate sponsors than ever before.

Nominees came from every nation within the UK and from 7 of the 9 English regions. This year’s categories included: Best Film Over 13s; Best Film Under 12s; Best Drama; Best Thriller; Best Horror; Best Screenplay; Best Animation; Best Fantasy Adventure; and Best Film Club.

Without the support of all First Light’s funders, sponsors, presenters, judges and the individuals who contribute to the making of the awards such a huge success, the ambitions of the awards and the opportunities for the young people would never have been realised.

The 2009 award sponsors were: Activision, the UK Film Council, EON Productions, HBO, Mizu Design, Odeon Cinemas, Sony Pictures Releasing, Time Warner, Total Film magazine and Ford. Celebrity presenters and judges included: Daniel Craig, Kate Beckinsale, Sienna Miller, Orlando Bloom, Joseph Fiennes, James Franco, Danny Boyle, Michael Sheen, Jason Isaacs and many more. The 2009 judges and presenters truly were the crème de la crème of the international film industry, including 3 Oscar winners, 2 Oscar nominees, 4 BAFTA winners, 12 BAFTA nominees, 2 Golden Globe winners, 3 Golden Globe nominees and 1 EMMY nominee.

You’ve Got To Kiss A Lot Of Frogs ...

The Prince’s Rainforests Project has been set up by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, to try to raise awareness of the connection between rainforest destruction and climate change in order to reach an agreement on emergency action for rainforests ahead of the climate change conference in Copenhagen this December.

What would you name our frog?

The frog is our rainforest ambassador - an example of the amazing diversity of life that can be found in tropical forests but also a symbol of the fragility of these ecosystems. One of the reasons we chose this amphibian as our champion is that frogs are an indicator species. They are affected by changes in their ecosystems before most other creatures and therefore are amongst the first to demonstrate the signs of climate change. (They also happen to have a long association with Princes...)

As you've seen over the past few months, thousands of people - including many of you - have been filmed with our frog, lending their voices and urging others to sign up and join the call for urgent action to stop rainforest destruction. They have also let us know that our frog needs a name and have offered some creative suggestions. See some of our favourites in our new video.

Check out Frog messages here.

“The Green String Initiative”

This string can help you remember. Hard to believe, isn't it? There's an old custom that says: 'tie a string around your finger to help you remember something.' The idea is this - you notice the string on your finger and it reminds you that you need to do something, or you need to be somewhere. Sounds brilliantly simple, doesn't it?

Well that’s what The Green String Initiative is for, tying a green string around your wrist, as a reminder of the Eco Disco Philosophy…"People * Planet * Party." If we change ourselves for the better, we will be changing the world. If we each offer to make our own lives a little greener, of course, these things will add up. But what if millions worked together, inspiring each other, learning from each other, bringing out the best in each other? Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?? Be part of it.

The Green String Initiative and Eco Disco. It’s free and you’ll get all the practical support, information and advice you need about living a greener life, not to mention an invite to the Eco Disco party’s happenings around the globe to “Save the World One Party at a Time!” Together, we can leave a lasting, green legacy. So join us, wear a green string around your wrist. And remember, however you play it, every positive action you take becomes part of something much bigger.

Go to www.eco-disco.com soon and sign up for a better life for you, me for a better planet through celebration.

Coming soon .... The Prince's Rainforest Project

The destruction of the rainforests releases more CO2 than all the world's cars, planes and ships put together. They also store a fifth of the world's man made emissions. So, if we are to combat climate change, stopping deforestation is vital.

"If we lose the battle against tropical deforestation, we lose the battle against climate change." Prince Charles.

Join the battle here.

We love Christian Audigier!

The Penthouse is now stocking Christian Audigier wines and champagne - hip hip, hurrah! Come celebrate our latest libations and check back here again soon, because we will also soon be giving the great man his very own room on our VIP floor. In the meantime, check out further information here.

Daddies Sauces 'Dad of the Year' Award

Lord Jason Scott organised the event for the 2009 Daddies Sauces ‘Dad of the Year’ Award at The Penthouse, with England Captain John Terry coming top of the poll and beating last year’s winner, Peter Andre, into second place.

Father of three year old twins, Georgie John and Summer Rose, said: “It’s a great honour to be voted dad of the year. I have won many trophies in my career and I am proud to say this is up there with all of them.
Georgie and Summer are great kids and I love them both dearly. My family mean the world to me and receiving this award has made me extremely proud. Being with the kids and watching them grow up and learning new things every day is a privilege and I’m honoured to receive this award.”
